This stair renovation was in my home.  I pulled up the carpet to find beautiful original wood floors.  I sanded and refinished them with a slightly darker stain and painted the backs of the stairs white (to the make the wood pop).  After a fresh coat of paint on the walls and new base molding, I added the runner.
